Ph.D. Position in Indology / Buddhist Studies

Department: Institute for Indology and Tibetology
Start date: 19 August 2013 or later
Deadline: 31 July 2013
Salary: TV‐L 13 / 75%
Term of employment: The initial term of employment is two years.

The Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU) is one of the most renowned and largest universities in Germany.

Tasks

The discovery of the oldest Buddhist manuscripts – written between the second century BCE and the fourth century CE in the northwest Indian region of Gandhāra – has provided an entirely new basis for our understanding of this formative phase of Buddhism. On the way from India through Gandhāra to Central Asia and China, Buddhism developed into a world religion, and Gandhāra played a central role in the development of Buddhist scholasticism, the Mahāyāna movement and Buddhist art. The project ‘Buddhist Manuscripts from Gandhāra’ prepares editions of newly discovered textual witnesses and investigates the linguistic, literary and cultural history of Buddhism in Gandhāra. It is supported by the Union of German Academies of Sciences and Humanities and is based at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich.

You will carry out a research project and write a Ph.D. dissertation that increase our knowledge of Buddhism in Gandhāra or an associated area of early Indian Buddhism, but will define the specific content of the project yourself.

You will be integrated in the research of the Gandhāra project and work together with its researchers.

You will be given opportunities for professional development through participation in the LMU’s interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in Buddhist Studies.

Requirements

A very good first degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., Indology, South Asian art history, Buddhist Studies, Sinology) is a
prerequisite. We expect the ability to contribute new knowledge on the basis of primary sources and through scholarly argumentation.

We offer individual support and an inspiring environment.

Equally qualified disabled applicants will be preferred. The LMU wishes to increase the number of women research and teaching and particularly encourages young female scholars to apply.
